Paul Brunet vit et travaille à Québec. Détenteur d’un baccalauréat (2005) et d’une maîtrise en arts visuels à l’Université Laval (2007), il se consacre principalement à la peinture. Dernièrement, il a assuré le commissariat et l’organisation du deuxième symposium de peinture de Québec «Pan! Peinture» (2008). En août 2007, il exposa ses peintures en solo dans les locaux du centre en art actuel La Chambre Blanche (Québec). Il a aussi participé à plusieurs expositions et activités artistiques à Québec dont notamment: l’exposition «Paul- L’œuvre de Michel Rabagliati», à la galerie Morgan Bridge (2008); l’exposition en duo «Sous le signe du doute», à la galerie Rouje (2007), ainsi qu’au premier symposium de peinture de Québec «Pan! Peinture» (2006). En 2005, il a remporté la bourse La Vigie-Peinture.

Ma peinture se distingue essentiellement par l’éclectisme de son répertoire pictural. Dans mes tableaux, j’établis une esthétique singulière en me réappropriant une multitude d’images, d’icônes, et d’approches picturales différentes ; tout en conservant une même gamme chromatique qui m’est propre. La couleur y est traitée en des contrastes francs, des couleurs iridescentes éclatantes, des aplats incongrus, ainsi qu’en un registre notable de textures qui soulignent les traces de l’histoire du tableau. L’importance de la matière-peinture dans mes œuvres amène, de fait, un dépassement de l’image représentée pour atteindre une dimension plus spécifique à la peinture en soi. La tension qui, dès lors, s’installe entre la dimension perceptuelle et conceptuelle de la peinture est ce qui me préoccupe principalement dans ma pratique picturale.

Je suis aussi attentif aux effets produits par la disposition spatiale de l’œuvre; qu’elle soit un tableau, un diptyque, un polyptyque, ou même une installation-peinture. Intéressé par ces différents systèmes de mise en espace de l’objet pictural dans le lieu d’exposition, j’explore ceux-ci de même que les conséquences de leur sélection.

Développant la notion d’inquiétante étrangeté, mes dernières réalisations puisent leur esthétique dans la bande dessinée, la culture populaire et l’iconographie religieuse. Elles sont le lieu d’improbables collages iconographiques qui s’ouvrent sur de vastes possibilités de sens.

Mes oeuvres, empreintes d’une pluralité stylistique, explorent les spécificités de la peinture et tentent d’en repousser les limites.

Paul Brunet lives and works in Quebec City. He has a B.A. (2005) and a master in visual arts from Laval University (2007). His complete body of work is dedicated to painting. Recently, he has been the curator and the organisor of the second symposium « Pan! Peinture » (2008) in Quebec City. In August 2007, he exhibited solo in the space of the artists center La Chambre Blanche (in Quebec City). He also participated to various exhibitions in Quebec City, such as « Paul-L’oeuvre de Michel Rabagliati », at the Morgan Bridge Gallery, in the duo exhibition «Sous le digne du doute» at Rouje Gallery (2007), and also at the first symposium « Pan! Peinture » in 2005. He was awarded the Vigie-Peinture Fellowship in 2005.

My work is different because of the plurality of my pictural répertoire. On the one hand, I establish an aesthetic by appropriating various images, icons and pictural approaches while defining a sense of colour that is unmistakly unique to my work.. Colours are at all times used in honest contrasts, some very bright and irridescent, others strikingly flat, in a mixture of textures which correspond to each painting’s own history. The importance given to paint as the primary material in my work offers an opportunity to go beyond simple representations, in order to reach a more specific dimension of painting in of itself. This tension which inevitably takes place between perceptual and conceptual aspects of the painting is what interests me the most in my practice.

On the other hand, I am also very keen to see the effect produced by spacial elements in most of my works, including: single paintings, dyptic, paintings constructed over numerous panels, or even an installation in a specific setting. I also have a keen understanding and interest in how my work interacts within the spaces in which it is exhibited.

I am also fascinated by the notion of what defines ‘foreign’, as my last works drew their aesthetics from comic strips, popular culture and religious iconographies. The meeting of these varied iconographies open the possibilities of interpretation and meaning. My works, also explore a plurality of painting techniques while pushing these styles to their limits in the very act of painting.
