PAUL BRUNET

Ma pratique en peinture se distingue essentiellement par son éclectisme. Dans mes tableaux, j'établis une esthétique du détournement en me réappropriant une multitude d'images, d'icônes, et d'approches picturales. Traitées dans une approche de coloriste, mes œuvres sont principalement peuplées de personnage et d'ambiances issues des médias de masse (télévision, bande dessinée, internet, jeux vidéos et cinéma). Elles mettent en scène un monde étrange et inquiétant où le tragique, teinté d'un humour louche et grinçant, devient absurde et ironique. Lieu d'improbables collages iconographiques, mes œuvres prennent la forme d'allégories questionnant l'espace qu'occupe l'image médiatique dans notre imaginaire.

Utilisant de plus en plus le numérique, lors de la conception initiale de mes images picturales, je suis aussi influencé par les nouveaux questionnements esthétiques qu'il produit; comme la création d'espaces oscillant entre bidimensionnalité et tridimensionnalité, ainsi que l'aspect graphique de l'image vectorisée. Même si mes images sont aux limites de l'illustration, l'importance de la matière-peinture demeure par ailleurs importante dans ma pratique picturale. Je suis aussi attentif aux effets produits par la disposition de l'œuvre dans l'espace d'exposition, qu'elle soit un tableau, un diptyque, un polyptyque, ou une installation-peinture. Dans mes dernières réalisations, je m'intéresse notamment à cet aspect en mettant l'emphase sur les rapprochements formels et narratifs inédits qui peuvent se produire entre les tableaux dans des lieux d'exposition différents.

Paul Brunet vit et travaille à Québec. Détenteur d'un baccalauréat et d'une maîtrise en arts visuels de l'Université Laval à Québec, il se consacre principalement à la peinture. L'artiste a récemment exposé son travail à NEXT (Chicago), Regart (Lévis), au Toronto International Art Fair (Toronto), à la galerie Laroche-Joncas (Montréal), à L'Écart... lieu d'art actuel (Rouyn-Noranda), et à Caravansérail (Rimouski). Il est coordonnateur de Pan! Peinture, un symposium de peinture actuelle à Québec, depuis la deuxième édition de l'événement en 2008. Paul Brunet est représenté par la galerie Laroche-Joncas à Montréal.

What makes my painting practice singular is its eclecticism. In my paintings, I establish an esthetic of displacement by appropriating a multitude of images, icons as well as using various pictorial approaches. Approaching painting from a colorist perspective, my works can be mostly composed of characters and atmospheres drawn from the mass media such as television, comics, video games and cinema but also from art history. They present a strange amalgamation where the tragic dubbed with a dubious sense of humor becomes absurd and ironic. Bringing together incongruous juxtapositions of iconographic images, my works take the shape of allegories questioning the space that occupy the mediated image in our collective imaginary.

Using digital technology at the initial conceptual stage of creating my images, I am also addressing the recent preoccupations in conceptual esthetics such as the creation of spaces that oscillate between bi dimensionality and tri dimensionality, and the graphic aspect of the vectorized image. Even if my images are at the limit of illustration, the importance of the material aspect of the work remains important in my practice. I am especially attentive to the effects produced by the positioning of the works in the exhibition space, whether exhibiting one painting, a diptych a polyptich or doing a painting installation. In my latest works, I am particularly interested to this aspect putting the emphasis on the formal arrangement and the creation of narratives that can be produced between the different works in the various exhibition spaces.

Paul Brunet lives and works in Quebec City. He obtained B.A. and M.A. in visual arts from the Laval University, with a main focuss on painting. Recently, the artist exhibited his work at NEXT (Chicago, USA), at Regart (Levis, Qc), at the Toronto International Art Fair (Toronto, On), at the Laroche/Joncas Gallery (Montreal, Qc), at L'Écart... lieu d'art actuel (Roun-Noranda, Qc) and at Caravansérail (Rimouski, Qc). He is also coordinator of Pan! Peinture, a symposium of contemporary painting in Quebec City, since 2008 the second year of that event. Paul Brunet is represented by the Laroche-Joncas Gallery in Montreal.
